Reset a Tripped Breaker Safely
Category: Electrical ·
Difficulty: Beginner ·
Time: 0.7h ·
Estimated cost: $0
Tools needed
- Flashlight
- Voltage tester (optional)
Materials needed
- Electrical tape (for labeling) (1 roll)
Execution steps
Unplug the offending appliance
Identify what was running when power went out (hair dryer, microwave, space heater). Unplug it before resetting — otherwise you'll just trip again.
Duration: 5 min
Find the panel
Open your main electrical panel. Look for the breaker that is in the middle position (not fully ON, not fully OFF). It's the tripped one.
Duration: 5 min
Reset firmly
Push the breaker fully to OFF first (you'll feel a click), then back to ON. Half-pushes don't reset.
Duration: 2 min
Listen and verify
Lights should come back on. Plug a small lamp into a working outlet on that circuit to confirm.
Duration: 5 min
If it trips again immediately
Do NOT keep resetting. The circuit is overloaded or short-circuited. Unplug everything on that circuit and call an electrician.
Duration: 5 min
Label your panel
While you have the panel open, label which breaker controls what room/outlet using a piece of electrical tape and a marker.
Duration: 20 min
Safety first
- Never stand on a wet floor at the panel — wear rubber-soled shoes, dry hands.
- Only ever touch the plastic breaker switch — never any metal inside the panel.
- If you smell burning plastic, call an electrician immediately and shut off the main.
When to hire a pro
If a breaker trips repeatedly within minutes of resetting, you have a short or overloaded circuit — that's a fire risk and needs an electrician now.
