Execution steps
Prep wall
Wash wall with TSP solution to remove grease. Mark a level horizontal line at one tile height up from the counter — your starting line.
Duration: 30 min
Dry-fit center
Find the visual center of each wall section. Lay out tiles dry on the counter to check for slivers at edges; shift starting point if needed.
Duration: 20 min
Spread mastic
Using the notched trowel, spread enough mastic for ~3 sq ft. Hold trowel at 45°; combs leave even ridges.
Duration: 15 min
Set tiles
Press tiles in place along the level line. Insert spacers between each. Work outward and up. Tap with rubber mallet to set evenly.
Duration: 1h 30m
Cut edge tiles
Measure and score full tiles with the cutter, snap off. Around outlets, score the cuts with a wet saw or rotary tool.
Duration: 1h
Let mastic cure
Wait 24 hours before grouting.
Duration: 5 min
Grout joints
Mix grout per package. Push diagonally across joints with a rubber float. Wait 15 min, then wipe haze with damp sponge in circular motion.
Duration: 1h
Final caulk and seal
After 24 hours, run silicone caulk where the tile meets countertop, cabinets, and outlets — never grout these joints, they will crack.
Duration: 30 min
Safety first
- Wear safety glasses when cutting tile — chips fly.
- Tile dust is silica — wear an N95 mask if cutting more than a few tiles indoors.
- Shut off and tape over any electrical outlet covers in the work area.
When to hire a pro
Backsplashes that wrap around windows or hoods with custom angles, or any natural stone tile, deserve a pro tile setter.
