Silence a Squeaky Hardwood Floor
Category: Flooring ·
Difficulty: Beginner ·
Time: 1.5h ·
Estimated cost: $35
Tools needed
- Cordless drill driver
- Stud finder
- Painters tape
- Rubber mallet
Materials needed
- Squeeeeek No More repair kit (scored screws + jig) (1 ea)
- Talcum powder (1 bottle)
- Wood glue (1 bottle)
Execution steps
Find the squeak
Walk slowly across the area, listening. Mark every squeak with painters tape.
Duration: 20 min
Locate the joist underneath
Use the stud finder set to deep-scan mode to find the joist running under the squeak. Mark with tape.
Duration: 15 min
Try talcum first (no holes)
Sprinkle talcum powder generously into floor seams. Sweep into cracks with a soft brush. Walk again — sometimes that's all it takes.
Duration: 15 min
Use the jig and scored screw
Place the kit's depth jig over the squeak, over the joist. Drive the scored screw through the jig down through the floor into the joist.
Duration: 20 min
Snap the screw head off
Slide the jig sideways. Rock it firmly back and forth — the scored screw breaks below the floor surface, leaving no visible head.
Duration: 10 min
Fill and conceal
Dab a tiny drop of wood glue into the screw hole. Wipe excess. Squeak is gone.
Duration: 10 min
Safety first
- ONLY use the kit's scored screws — regular screws won't break off cleanly and will protrude.
- If you can't find a joist, stop — driving a screw blind risks hitting plumbing or wiring.
When to hire a pro
If the entire floor moves underfoot (not just squeaks), the subfloor is failing — call a flooring contractor.
