Category: Electrical ·
Difficulty: Beginner ·
Time: 1.3h ·
Estimated cost: $180
Tools needed
- Voltage tester
- Phillips screwdriver
- Drill with masonry/wood bit
- Level
- Smartphone
Materials needed
- Smart video doorbell (1 ea)
- Chime power kit module (1 ea)
- Drywall/masonry anchors (1 pk)
- Wedge mounting plate (1 ea)
Execution steps
Kill power at the breaker
Find the doorbell breaker (sometimes labeled "chime"). Flip off. Test the existing doorbell wires with a voltage tester.
Duration: 10 min
Remove old doorbell
Unscrew old button. Disconnect both wires. Tape ends with electrical tape if you need to walk away.
Duration: 10 min
Install chime power kit
Open the indoor chime cover. Wire the included power kit module to the chime terminals per the kit diagram. This stops LED flicker.
Duration: 20 min
Mount the doorbell base
Use the level. Mark and drill holes. Insert anchors. Connect the two wires to the doorbell screws (polarity does not matter).
Duration: 20 min
Snap on faceplate, restore power, set up app
Click faceplate on. Flip breaker back on. Open the manufacturer's app, scan the QR code, connect to Wi-Fi, test a ring from outside.
Duration: 20 min
Safety first
- Always cut power at the breaker — doorbell transformers are still live even if the chime is silent.
- Skipping the chime power kit causes mechanical chimes to buzz and LED bulbs to flicker.
When to hire a pro
No existing doorbell wiring at all (battery-only models avoid this), or transformer below 16V — hire a low-voltage electrician.
