Time: 2h ·
Estimated cost: $55
Tools needed
- Phillips screwdriver
- Flat pry bar
- Shop vacuum
- Stiff brush
- Flashlight
- Helper
Materials needed
- Sliding door roller assembly replacement set (1 ea)
- Silicone spray lubricant (1 can)
- Track cleaning brush kit (1 ea)
Execution steps
Vacuum the track
Vacuum the bottom track thoroughly. Use the brush to scrub gunk loose, then vacuum again. Most "broken" doors are just clogged tracks.
Duration: 20 min
Adjust roller screws first
Look at the bottom corners of the door for two small adjustment screws. Turn clockwise to raise that corner. Try level adjustments before pulling the door.
Duration: 15 min
Lift the door out (with helper)
If still bound: remove the head stop trim at the top. With a helper, lift the door up and out at the bottom. Set it on padded sawhorses.
Duration: 25 min
Replace the rollers
Unscrew the old rollers from each bottom corner. Snap in the new roller assemblies. Test that wheels spin freely.
Duration: 30 min
Reinstall and tune
Lift the door back into the top track and lower into the bottom track. Reinstall the head stop. Adjust roller screws so the door slides smoothly with no scraping.
Duration: 20 min
Lubricate
Spray silicone lubricant along the bottom track. Slide door back and forth 10 times.
Duration: 10 min
Safety first
- Sliding patio doors weigh 80-120 lbs of glass. ALWAYS use a helper to lift.
- Watch for the head stop falling out when removed — it can swing into the glass.
When to hire a pro
If the bottom track itself is bent or split, the door frame needs replacement — call a door company.
