Install a Peel-and-Stick Kitchen Backsplash
Category: Tile ·
Difficulty: Beginner ·
Time: 2.8h ·
Estimated cost: $120
Tools needed
- Utility knife with extra blades
- Straight edge ruler
- Smoothing squeegee
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Cutting mat
Materials needed
- Peel-and-stick subway tile sheets (10 sq ft each) (3 pk)
- Replacement utility knife blades (1 pk)
- Isopropyl alcohol cleaner (1 qt)
- Microfiber cloths (3 ea)
Execution steps
Clean and dry the wall
Wipe entire backsplash area with alcohol and let dry 15 minutes. Grease ruins adhesion.
Duration: 20 min
Plan the layout
Find the wall center. Dry-lay sheets to plan cuts at corners and outlets. Always cut OUTLET HOLES BIGGER than needed — covers hide gaps.
Duration: 30 min
Stick first row
Peel backing halfway, press the bottom edge flush against the countertop. Smooth from center out with the squeegee. Continue across.
Duration: 30 min
Cut outlet openings
Cut with utility knife on the cutting mat. Test fit before pulling backing. Outlet covers will hide 1/8 inch gaps.
Duration: 30 min
Stack rows up to cabinets
Continue rows up to the underside of upper cabinets. Trim final row to height with the utility knife.
Duration: 45 min
Final pass and outlet covers
Press every seam firmly. Re-install outlet covers. Caulk the bottom seam where backsplash meets countertop for water resistance.
Duration: 15 min
Safety first
- Change utility knife blades often — dull blades tear the tile face.
- Turn off the breaker BEFORE you remove outlet covers and cut around live outlets.
When to hire a pro
If you want real ceramic tile with thinset and grout — that's a different skill set; hire a tile setter.
