Materials needed

Execution steps
Acclimate 48 hours
Open boxes in the room. Mix planks from 3 boxes during install to randomize color variation.
Duration: 1h
Roll underlayment
Foam side up, vapor barrier down. Butt seams, tape with the included seam tape. Run perpendicular to plank direction.
Duration: 30 min
Start with 1/4" spacers at wall
Snap a chalk line 1/4" off the longest wall. First row tongue toward the wall — cut tongues off cleanly with the utility knife so plank sits flat against spacers.
Duration: 30 min
Click and stagger
Each new plank: angle long edge in, drop, then snap end joint. Stagger ends at least 12". Tap edges home with the block — never strike the plank face.
Duration: 3h 20m
Cut around door jambs
Undercut casings with a flush saw. Jigsaw notches for HVAC registers and pipes. Keep 1/4" gap everywhere.
Duration: 1h
Last row and trim
Rip last row to fit. Pull tight with pull bar. Install quarter-round shoe nailed into baseboard, not floor. Install transitions at doorways.
Duration: 45 min
Safety first
- Laminate hates water — wipe spills immediately, never wet-mop, no installations in bathrooms or laundry rooms unless specifically waterproof rated.
- Mind the expansion gap — pinning the floor will buckle it.
When to hire a pro
Whole-house installs over 1,000 sq ft or jobs requiring multiple transitions through doorways — pros are dramatically faster.
