Remove Hard Water Stains from a Glass Shower Door
Category: Cleaning ·
Difficulty: Beginner ·
Time: 1.8h ·
Estimated cost: $25
Tools needed
- Spray bottle
- Plastic razor scraper
- Microfiber cloths
- Rubber gloves
Materials needed
- Distilled white vinegar (gallon) (1 ea)
- Baking soda (1 box)
- Melamine sponge (4-pack) (1 pk)
- Rain-X shower glass treatment (1 bottle)
Execution steps
Heat and spray
Run the shower hot for 2 minutes to warm the glass. Turn off. Spray the entire glass surface with straight white vinegar.
Duration: 10 min
Dwell 30 minutes
Let the vinegar sit. Re-spray any area that runs dry. Crack a window or run the fan — it smells.
Duration: 30 min
Paste and scrub
Mix a thick paste of baking soda + a little water. Scrub the glass in small circles with a melamine sponge. The fizz lifts mineral crust.
Duration: 30 min
Scrape stubborn spots
Hold the plastic razor at a 45-degree angle and slide gently across remaining crust. Plastic only — metal scratches.
Duration: 15 min
Rinse and dry
Rinse top to bottom with warm water. Squeegee dry. Buff with a clean microfiber.
Duration: 10 min
Apply Rain-X treatment
Apply the glass treatment per bottle directions. This makes water bead off and dramatically slows new buildup.
Duration: 15 min
Safety first
- Never mix vinegar with bleach — produces toxic chlorine gas.
- Ventilate the bathroom during scrubbing.
- Skip ammonia cleaners on tinted glass — they can stain.
When to hire a pro
If glass is permanently etched (white haze that won't come off) — call a glass company; the surface is mineral-fused and needs professional polishing.
