Mount Floating Shelves on Drywall
Category: Interior ·
Difficulty: Beginner ·
Time: 1h ·
Estimated cost: $80
Tools needed
- Cordless drill
- 3/16" drill bit
- 4-foot level
- Stud finder
- Tape measure
- Pencil
Materials needed
- Floating shelf with hidden brackets (2 ea)
- Snap-toggle bolts (1/4" x 2") (1 pk)
- Wall anchors (heavy duty) (1 pk)
Execution steps
Lay out shelf heights
Mark the shelf height with a level pencil line. Mark a second line above for a second shelf if doing a stack.
Duration: 10 min
Find studs
Run the stud finder along the line. Mark every stud. Try to hit at least one stud per shelf — the rest go into toggles.
Duration: 10 min
Drill and anchor
Drill 3/16" pilot holes. Drive screws into studs, install snap-toggle anchors in non-stud holes.
Duration: 25 min
Mount bracket bar and slide shelf on
Screw the steel bracket bar to the wall (check level again). Slide the wooden shelf over the bracket. Tap from the bottom to seat.
Duration: 15 min
Safety first
- Drywall alone holds about 5-10 lbs per anchor — never trust it for heavy books without a toggle or stud.
- Test load with one hand before loading up — a shelf failure ruins drywall and finishes below.
When to hire a pro
If you want one continuous 8+ ft shelf — get a carpenter to install a proper French cleat.
