Execution steps
Acclimate planks 48 hours
Open boxes in the install room for 48 hours so the wood adjusts to humidity.
Duration: 1h
Prep and roll underlayment
Subfloor flat to 3/16" over 10 ft, swept clean. Roll out foam underlayment with the vapor barrier facing the subfloor, butt seams (do not overlap), tape seams.
Duration: 45 min
Start straight along longest wall
Place 3/8" spacers, lay first row tongue-in toward the wall. Use the straightest planks. End joints stagger 12" minimum row to row.
Duration: 45 min
Click and tap rows
Each new plank: angle the long edge into the previous row, drop flat, then tap the end joint home with the tapping block. Never strike the visible edge — always the tongue.
Duration: 4h
Cut around doors and obstacles
Undercut door casings with a flush saw so the plank slides under. Jigsaw curves and cutouts. Always maintain 3/8" expansion gap at all walls and pipes.
Duration: 1h 30m
Last row and transitions
Rip the last row to fit minus 3/8". Pull tight with pull bar. Install transitions at doorways. Install quarter-round shoe to cover gap.
Duration: 1h
Safety first
- Floating floors NEED the expansion gap — pinned trim or jammed pipes will cause the floor to buckle in summer.
- Never glue down floating planks — defeats the design and voids the warranty.
When to hire a pro
Floors over radiant heat or floors with a slope greater than 3/16" over 10 ft — both need pro-level prep.
