Cut Drywall for Recessed Can Lights
Category: Drywall ·
Difficulty: Intermediate ·
Time: 1.3h ·
Estimated cost: $18
Tools needed
- Tape measure
- Compass or hole-cut gauge
- Spiral cut-out tool (RotoZip) or drywall jab saw
- Pencil
- Surform rasp
- Dust mask
Materials needed
- 1/2" drywall sheet (4x8) (1 sheet)
- Cardboard scrap (cut template) (1 pc)
Execution steps
Locate the fixture
Measure from a fixed reference edge to the CENTER of each can in both directions and write the numbers down BEFORE you lift the sheet. Measure twice, cut once.
Duration: 15 min
Transfer to the new sheet
Lay out those same two dimensions on the new sheet to mark each fixture center.
Duration: 15 min
Mark the circle
Set a compass to the can diameter and scribe the circle, or use a hole-cut gauge for a clean round line.
Duration: 10 min
Cut the opening
Cut with a spiral cut-out tool or jab saw, staying just inside the line. Old-work LED trim rings hide up to ~1/8" of slop, but a tight round hole looks pro.
Duration: 15 min
Test fit and hang
Dry-fit the sheet over the cans, ease any tight holes with a rasp, then screw the sheet off. Never bury a junction box — cut its access opening too.
Duration: 20 min
Safety first
- Kill the breaker for the light circuit before cutting near cans or junction boxes.
- Wear a dust mask and eye protection when cutting.
- Never enclose a junction box behind solid drywall — keep it accessible.
When to hire a pro
New can locations that need wiring pulled, or fixtures over a finished ceiling with no attic access, are an electrician's job.
