Patch a Drywall Hole (Doorknob Size)
Category: Drywall ·
Difficulty: Beginner ·
Time: 1.2h ·
Estimated cost: $25
Tools needed
- Utility knife
- Drywall saw
- 6" putty knife
- Sanding block (220 grit)
- Drill
Materials needed
- Drywall patch (4"x4" self-adhesive mesh) (1 ea)
- Lightweight joint compound (quart) (1 tub)
- Drywall primer (small) (1 qt)
- Wall paint to match (1 qt)
Execution steps
Square the hole
Use the utility knife to cut the ragged hole into a clean square slightly larger than the damage.
Duration: 5 min
Apply mesh patch
Center the self-adhesive mesh patch over the squared hole, press firmly to bond.
Duration: 3 min
First coat of mud
Spread joint compound over the patch with the 6" knife, feathering 2-3 inches beyond the patch edges. Let dry 4-6 hours.
Duration: 10 min
Sand smooth
Lightly sand the dried compound flush with the wall using 220 grit. Wipe dust with a damp rag.
Duration: 10 min
Second coat (skim)
Apply a thinner, wider coat to feather edges further. Dry 4-6 hours.
Duration: 8 min
Final sand and prime
Sand again, then roll on drywall primer to seal the patch.
Duration: 15 min
Paint to match
Apply two thin coats of wall paint with a small roller, feathering edges into surrounding wall.
Duration: 20 min
Safety first
- Wear a dust mask when sanding — drywall dust irritates lungs.
- Do not skip primer; bare patch absorbs paint differently and shows as a 'flash' spot.
