Replace a Flexible Dryer Vent Hose
Category: Appliances ·
Difficulty: Beginner ·
Time: 1.2h ·
Estimated cost: $35
Tools needed
- Nut driver
- Dryer vent brush
- Shop vacuum
- Dust mask
Materials needed
- Rigid aluminum dryer duct (4" x 8 ft) (1 ea)
- Adjustable hose clamps (2 ea)
- Foil HVAC tape (1 roll)
Execution steps
Unplug and pull dryer out
Unplug the dryer (or shut the gas valve if gas). Walk the dryer 2-3 feet away from the wall.
Duration: 10 min
Remove old vent hose
Loosen the clamps at the dryer outlet and wall cap. Pull the old hose free. Bag it — lint dust is nasty.
Duration: 10 min
Vacuum lint everywhere
Vacuum out the dryer outlet, the wall cavity, and run the vent brush down the wall stub. This is the fire-prevention step.
Duration: 20 min
Install rigid duct
Cut rigid duct to length with snips. Slide hose clamps over both ends, push duct over the dryer outlet and wall stub, tighten clamps.
Duration: 20 min
Seal joints and test
Wrap each joint with foil tape (never duct tape — it dries out). Push dryer back. Run a 10-minute dry cycle and feel for warm airflow at the outdoor cap.
Duration: 10 min
Safety first
- Lint inside a dryer vent is the #1 cause of home appliance fires — never skip the vacuum step.
- Use rigid aluminum, not flexible foil. Flex foil traps lint and is banned by most newer codes.
- If gas dryer: shut the gas valve first and check for leaks with soapy water after re-connecting.
When to hire a pro
If your vent run is over 25 ft, has more than two elbows, or vents through the roof — hire a dryer-vent specialist.
