Materials needed
- 1/4" hex Allen wrench (often shipped with disposal) (1 ea)

Duration: 5 min
Find the hex socket
Look underneath the disposal in the center of the bottom. You'll see a 1/4" hex socket. That's the manual override.
Duration: 5 min
Free the flywheel
Insert the Allen wrench. Crank back and forth firmly. You'll feel the jam break loose with a thunk.
Duration: 10 min
Remove the obstruction
Reach in from the top with wooden tongs (NEVER your hand). Pull out bones, fruit pits, or silverware.
Duration: 10 min
Reset and test
Press the small red reset button on the bottom of the unit. Restore power. Run cold water and flip the switch.
Duration: 5 min
Safety first
- NEVER put your hand into a disposal — even "off" units can spring back on under a stuck blade.
- Use only wooden or rubber-coated tongs — metal can spark.
- If the unit hums but won't spin after un-jamming, the motor is fried — replace it.
When to hire a pro
If the disposal leaks from the bottom after un-jamming, the motor seal is gone — replace the unit (see the swap guide).
