Category: Interior ·
Difficulty: Beginner ·
Time: 0.8h ·
Estimated cost: $60
Tools needed
- Cordless drill
- 3/16" drill bit
- 4-foot level
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Stud finder
Materials needed
- Metal curtain rod with finials (1 ea)
- End brackets (2 ea)
- Drywall toggle anchors (1 pk)
- Pan-head screws (1 pk)
Execution steps
Mark the height
Decide rod height — usually 4 to 6 inches above the window trim. Mark a level line across the wall with a pencil.
Duration: 10 min
Find studs or set anchors
Use a stud finder. If brackets miss studs, drill 3/16" pilot holes and insert toggle anchors.
Duration: 10 min
Mount brackets
Screw end brackets onto studs or anchors. Check that both are level using the 4-foot level resting on the brackets.
Duration: 15 min
Hang rod and curtains
Slide curtains onto the rod, then drop the rod into the brackets. Tighten any set screws.
Duration: 10 min
Safety first
- Don't trust eyeballing — always use a level. A 1/4 inch tilt is visible across a window.
- Heavy blackout curtains can pull bracket screws out of bare drywall; always use toggle anchors or hit a stud.
