Install Peel-and-Stick Carpet Tiles
Category: Flooring ·
Difficulty: Beginner ·
Time: 4.6h ·
Estimated cost: $280
Tools needed
- Sharp utility knife
- Straight edge
- Chalk line
- Framing square
- Soft mallet
- Vacuum
Materials needed
- 18"x18" modular carpet tiles (175 sq ft) (78 ea)
- Double-sided carpet tape (optional) (1 roll)
- Replacement utility blades (1 pk)
Execution steps
Vacuum and find center
Vacuum subfloor perfectly clean. Measure each wall and mark the midpoint. Snap two perpendicular chalk lines through the room center.
Duration: 30 min
Dry-lay center 4 tiles
Set the first 4 tiles into the chalk-line quadrants. If the gap at walls would be less than 6", shift the centerline so cut tiles at walls are bigger.
Duration: 20 min
Quarter-turn pattern
Each tile has an arrow on the back. Lay tiles with the arrows rotated 90 degrees from the neighbor — this is the standard look and hides seams.
Duration: 1h 30m
Press, peel, and stick
Peel the backing on a tile, set it tight to the neighbor (don't compress edges, just butt them), press flat with hand pressure. Tap edges down with the mallet.
Duration: 1h
Cut edge and corner tiles
Set the cut tile on top of the last full tile, flip flush against the wall, mark on top — utility knife along the line on a hard surface.
Duration: 1h
Vacuum and walk
Vacuum the new floor. Walk all seams to seat them. After 24 hours adhesive is fully set.
Duration: 15 min
Safety first
- Always cut tiles face-up so the wear layer is the clean cut edge.
- Replace blades every 15-20 cuts — dull blades skate and end up cutting the installer.
When to hire a pro
Basements with unresolved moisture — fix the moisture first, no flooring on a damp slab.
